Obituary:
Margaret Johnson Barch, passed away on February 8, 2015.
She was a beloved wife, sister, aunt, and a dear friend to many. Margaret was born in Washington, GA in 1945 and lived every aspect of her life with grace, intelligence and warmth.
Margaret was a member of Highland Baptist Church and played an active role in the Cherokee Triangle Neighborhood. She was a proud alum of the University of Minnesota and received her master's in biology from Georgia State University. A pioneering cytogenetic technologist for more than 40 years, Margaret had been manager and interim director of the Frank P. Yen Cytogenetics Laboratory at the University of Louisville since 1991. There she coauthored articles in the fields of pediatric and cancer genetics. Margaret received the 2005 Outstanding Achievement Award of the Association of Genetic Technologists (AGT) and edited the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th editions (in press) of the AGT's Cytogenetics Laboratory Manual, used worldwide.
Margaret's impressive scientific credentials were complemented by a passion for beauty and the arts- she was an avid reader, a lover of all wildflowers and enjoyed the ballet, orchestra and opera. Above all, however, Margaret valued her relationships with her friends and family.
She is survived by her husband and soul mate of 32 years, Gary; siblings Robert F. Johnson, Jane Roberta Johnson Roper (John, dec.), Ann Johnson Bowes (Milow) and many treasured nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jane Septima Fluker Johnson and Robert W. Johnson.
All who had the good fortune of knowing Margaret will remember her as someone who truly made her world a better place.
Visitation will be 9-11 a.m. Thursday, February 12, 2015 at Highland Baptist Church, 1101 Cherokee Road immediately followed by a celebration of Margaret's life beginning at 11 am in the church sanctuary.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Highland Baptist Church, the Foundation of Genetic Technologists , AGT Executive Office, P.O. Box 19193 Lenexa, KS 66285 and the Kentucky Opera
